Dear First Name Last Name,

Winning the battle: Neurodegenerative Diseases and Ayurveda

Neuro-degenerative

After decades of research, we still have many more questions than answers about several Neuro degenerative disorders that can rob patients of their memory, coordination; mood swings etc. and most important of all their independence.

What is Neurodegenerative Disease?

Nouro-degenrative-1

Neurodegenerative disease is an umbrella term for a range of conditions which primarily affect the neurons in the human brain. Neurons are the building blocks of the nervous system which includes the brain and spinal cord. Neurons normally don’t reproduce or replace themselves, so when they become damaged or die they cannot be replaced by the body. Examples of neurodegenerative diseases include Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s disease, Dementia etc.

The Challenge of Neuro degenerative diseases

Neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and depression are prevalent and devastating illnesses.

The World Health Organization estimates that, by 2040, neurodegenerative diseases will surpass cancer as the principal cause of death in industrialized countries. Neurodegenerative disorders are characterized by progressive loss of neurons in sensory, motor, and cognitive systems.

Despite various advances in the understanding of the diseases, pharmacological treatment by conventional medicine has not obtained satisfactory results.

However, Ayurveda is potential for prevention of the neurodegeneration with its principles of Ahara, Vihara, Aushadh and kriya.

The central nervous system is vulnerable to oxidative stress as a consequence of high metabolic rate and deficient antioxidant system. The increasing amount of experimental evidence shows the involvement of reactive oxygen species in neurodegenerative diseases. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals and are effective in suppressing or preventing these disorders.

Ayurveda has defined a number of plants with therapeutic benefits for the treatment of neurodegenerative disease, having antioxidant activities. Extracts of Bacopa monniera had proved to improve human cognitive function. Bacopa extract is claimed to have antioxidative function. Extracts of Withania somnifera improves antioxidant status in oxidative stress induced neurodegeneration. It has been proved that consumption of antioxidant rich diet may reduce lipid peroxide and increase antioxidant levels in plasma. There are still a large number of plants that need to be examined for their potential neuroprotective properties.

Ayurveda Panchakarma therapies including Snehana, Swedana, Basti are very effective in controlling Vayu- Vata dosha out of the Tridoshas, is the main culprit of neurodegenerative conditions.

Natural imbalance is due to time and age, which are mild and normally do not cause any problems. Vata, Pitta, and Kapha increase and become predominant during one's life, during a season and during certain times of day. For example, Vata is predominant during the latter part of one's life, during the fall season and during late afternoon, as well as during the last part of night and the last part of digestion. Pitta is predominant during middle age, during the summer season, at midday, at midnight and during the middle part of digestion. Kapha is predominant during childhood, during the spring season, in late morning, at the first part of evening and during the early part of digestion.

Unnatural imbalance is caused due to inappropriate diet, inappropriate lifestyle, trauma (like a car accident), viruses, parasites, etc. While some of these items are beyond our control, the type of lifestyle we live and the foods we eat are within our control.

Here in neurodegenerative conditions inappropriate diet like excessive use of cold, dry items, skipping the daily routine, highly stressful mental activities without proper rest to mind and body, etc. causes high vata in the body. Increased Vata Dosha in the body ultimately disturbs its natural functions of mental faculties like reduced memory power, lack of coordination, mood swings, loss of sleep etc. All these occur in the body due to degeneration of neurons due to high vata.

Ayurveda’s approach of Ahara- diet, Vihara- lifestyle, Aushadh- Medicines and kriya- Panchakarma treatments helps in arresting the progression of degeneration by effectively controlling the Vata in the body.

If the symptoms of Vata aggravation in body are detected at an early stage, progression of Neurodegeneration leading to serious disorders like Alzheimer’s, Parkinsonism etc. can be arrested and reversed.

AyurVAID and Neurodegenerative Disorders - A Parkinson’s Case

This 65 yrs plus age patient of parkinsonism is in fact asymptomatic today- her tremors have stopped completely; her health has improved significantly in all aspects- reflected in the fact that the steady reduction in her weight over time has been arrested but she also has put on 8.5 Kg over a 6m. period. The earlier the intervention the better. The fact that classical Ayurveda chikitsa has a decent chance to arrest degenerative changes in the brain and possibly reverse the condition needs to be widely disseminated. Dr. Radhika Varma, Sr. Physician and Head-Shalakya Department, AyurVAID Hospitals is the treating physician.
