An anal fistula is a condition characterized by an abnormal tract or tunnel that forms between the inside of the anal canal or rectum and the skin surrounding the anus. It typically develops as a consequence of an untreated anal abscess, which is a localized collection of pus near the anus. When an abscess doesn’t fully heal, it may lead to the formation of a fistula. This condition can be quite uncomfortable and, if left untreated, may lead to recurrent infections and complications.
