Low back ache or lumbago is a common presentation in middle to elderly age groups.
It is denoted as KATISHOOLA in Ayurveda. KATI is the area pertaining to the lumbosacral spine.
Pain in the low back, varying in intensity and frequency affects daily activities at different levels. The nature of pain may range from a dull ache to shooting pain, freezing you in a position making it difficult to move or stand up straight.
Katishoola is a disease caused by the increase of Vata dosha in the body. Aggravation of vata dosha due to old age, faulty diet, and lifestyle result in triggering of an inflammatory process or amatwa in the body which in turn slows down metabolism, causes srotorodha or blockages in channels of circulation, and hinders tissue metabolism. This can affect bone health and lead to muscle stiffness resulting in pain.
The vitiated vata cause dryness of the shleshmaka kapha/synovial fluids resulting in friction of the joint surfaces leading to arthritic changes, movement restriction, and pain on movements.
AyurVAID focuses on precision classical Ayurveda treatment protocols, following the fundamental principles of Ayurveda in addressing the root cause of diseases. After an in-depth assessment of the symptoms, detailed history taking, and understanding of the patient and the disease thoroughly on Ayurveda parameters, a definite treatment protocol is designed.

Ayurveda management of back pain is determined after analyzing a variety of factors in the body like body constitution, nature of aggravated doshas, type of pain and location, the root cause of the condition, investigation support, and medical history. Ayurveda treatment focuses on correcting inflammation, removing obstructions, relieve muscle spasms and pain. Based on the underlying factors that lead to pain, panchakarma treatments like nasya, virechana, vasthi, and rakthamoksha are planned. Also, other para-surgical procedures like Agni karma and siravedha are also beneficial in cases of low back pain.
The outcomes of treatment in acute cases of back pain without many clinical findings are high. Moderate cases of chronic pain depending on the intensity of the root cause can provide reversal of pathology and a state of remission. Severe cases of back pain will need regular follow-ups along with correction of other causative factors.
