Ayurveda Treatment for Low Back Pain

Low back ache or lumbago is a common presentation in middle to elderly age groups.

It is denoted as KATISHOOLA in Ayurveda. KATI is the area pertaining to the lumbosacral spine.

Pain in the low back, varying in intensity and frequency affects daily activities at different levels. The nature of pain may range from a dull ache to shooting pain, freezing you in a position making it difficult to move or stand up straight.

Katishoola is a disease caused by the increase of Vata dosha in the body. Aggravation of vata dosha due to old age, faulty diet, and lifestyle result in triggering of an inflammatory process or amatwa in the body which in turn slows down metabolism, causes srotorodha or blockages in channels of circulation, and hinders tissue metabolism. This can affect bone health and lead to muscle stiffness resulting in pain.

The vitiated vata cause dryness of the shleshmaka kapha/synovial fluids resulting in friction of the joint surfaces leading to arthritic changes, movement restriction, and pain on movements.
