Why do some people find it challenging to gain weight?

People often blame a fast metabolism when someone finds it difficult to gain weight. While metabolism can play a role, it is not the only explanation. Some people lose their appetite quickly and feel full after just a few bites. Others lose weight after a long illness and find that regaining it takes much longer than expected. Because of this, Ayurveda does not begin by assuming that everyone needs the same advice. The first consultation is usually a conversation. Before any diet is suggested, the physician discusses ಹಸಿವು, meal timing, sleep, bowel habits, and recent weight changes. Digestion is one of the first things an Ayurveda physician pays attention to. This digestive capacity is referred to as ಅಗ್ನಿ. Even when a person is eating enough, poor Agni may mean the body is not getting the full benefit from that food. Daily habits matter too.ವಾತ may also become aggravated by everyday routines such as skipping meals, inadequate sleep, ದೀರ್ಘಕಾಲದ ಒತ್ತಡ, or overexertion. The changes are not always obvious at first. Some people notice that they no longer feel hungry. Others eat as usual but still struggle to gain weight. In Ayurveda, unhealthy emaciation is described as Karshya. When the loss of body tissues is more severe, it is known as Atikarshya.

Low body weight is not always related to digestion or lifestyle. ಹೈಪರ್ ಥೈರಾಯ್ಡಿಸಮ್, ಮಧುಮೇಹ, chronic gastrointestinal disorders, malabsorption syndromes, nutritional deficiencies, chronic infections, and eating disorders can also be responsible. These conditions require proper medical evaluation and appropriate treatment before any weight-gain plan is started.

Ayurveda's understanding of rebuilding weight

The Ayurveda approach to weight gain is very different from simply eating more. The first step is preparation of the body. This is where Brimhana becomes important. It is the Ayurveda approach to rebuilding strength and supporting healthy tissue growth in people who are weak or undernourished. The emphasis is on nourishing the body gradually rather than aiming for rapid weight gain. If digestion is weak, increasing heavy or rich foods too quickly often has the opposite effect. Some people lose their appetite further, while others complain of bloating, heaviness, or discomfort after meals. Simply adding calories does not solve the problem. For this reason, treatment usually begins with improving Agni, the digestive and metabolic fire. As digestion becomes steadier, appetite often improves, and the body is better prepared to receive nourishment.

After the assessment, the treatment plan is tailored to the individual’s needs. Brimhana Chikitsa may involve changes in diet, daily routines, and selected Ayurveda medicines. In someone recovering from a prolonged illness, Rasayana therapy may be added later, once strength has begun to return.

Ayurveda looks at nourishment as something that develops over time. Properly digested food first forms Rasa Dhatu, the body’s primary nourishing tissue. It is from this that the remaining tissues are believed to receive nourishment. If digestion is weak, simply eating more may not achieve the desired results. This is why treatment often begins with improving digestion before focusing on healthy weight gain. The treatment plan is planned after assessing the individual as a whole. Appetite, digestion, bowel habits, sleep, daily routine, ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ (body constitution),ವಿಕೃತಿ (current imbalance), and Bala (overall strength) all help guide the approach. Two people with similar body weight may need very different treatment because the underlying reasons for being underweight are not always the same.

Herbs used in Ayurvedic medicine for weight gain

Many people expect herbs to increase body weight directly. But Ayurveda does not work in that direct way. Herbs are supportive, not standalone solutions.

Ashwagandha is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine for weight gain when the aim is to improve strength and support healthy weight gain. Not everyone who is underweight is advised to take Ashwagandha. It is usually considered when the person also feels physically weak, gets tired easily, or is recovering from a prolonged illness. Healthy weight gain, if it occurs, is expected to follow as strength returns.

ಶತಾವರಿ is considered more nourishing and is sometimes used when the body feels depleted and needs rebuilding support. It is gentler and is chosen based on the person’s condition.

The important point is that herbs are not selected just because someone is underweight. They are chosen based on digestion, strength, medical history, and overall condition.

Note: Self-medication is not advised because low weight can sometimes be linked to underlying medical problems that need proper treatment first.

Simple Ayurveda weight gain diet approach

People looking to gain weight often ask for a list of foods to eat. In practice, that list is rarely the same for everyone. Someone recovering after a prolonged illness may need a different diet from a person who has always been naturally lean.

In Ayurveda, the diet is planned as part of Brimhana Chikitsa. Classical texts describe Brimhana Ahara as foods that are predominantly Madhura Rasa (sweet taste) and have Snigdha (unctuous or oily) and Guru (heavy and nourishing) qualities. Milk, ghee, rice, wheat, green gram, bananas, dates, raisins, and soaked almonds are among the foods commonly used, although they are not prescribed in the same way for everyone. The choice depends on appetite, digestion, and the person’s overall condition. Regular meal timings are encouraged because they help support a steady digestive rhythm, whereas frequently skipping meals or eating very late at night may interfere with it.

Lifestyle and daily habits

Diet is only one part of treatment. Ayurveda also pays close attention to Vihara, or everyday habits, because they influence how well the body responds to nourishment. Staying up late, skipping meals, working through long periods of stress, or pushing the body with excessive physical activity can all make it harder to rebuild strength. Some people notice that their appetite becomes irregular. Others feel tired despite eating reasonably well.

During treatment, simple routines are often encouraged. Eating meals at regular times, getting adequate sleep, and allowing enough time for rest between periods of activity all help support recovery. Exercise is not avoided, but it is kept appropriate to the person’s strength. Someone who has recently recovered from an illness is usually advised to begin with gentle strengthening exercises rather than long or exhausting workouts. In some cases, Abhyanga (oil massage) is also recommended as part of the overall treatment plan.

When should unexplained weight loss be evaluated?

If weight loss happens without trying, continues despite eating well, or is accompanied by symptoms such as persistent diarrhoea, fever, excessive thirst, difficulty swallowing, or loss of appetite, medical evaluation is important. Low body weight is not always related to diet or digestion. Identifying and treating the underlying cause (such as Cancer, Diabetes) should always come before starting a weight-gain programme.

Weight gain takes time

One of the most important things to understand is that healthy weight gain is not quick. People often expect visible changes within a short time, but the body does not work that way. In most cases, the first signs of improvement are not on the weighing scale. Appetite starts improving first. Digestion feels lighter. Energy levels slowly come back. Daily fatigue reduces. Only after these internal changes does body weight start increasing steadily. That is the core idea behind how to gain weight naturally in Ayurveda. The goal is not forced weight gain but restoring the body’s ability to digest, absorb, and build tissue properly. When that foundation is strong, weight gain becomes a natural result rather than something that has to be pushed.

FAQ

Can Ayurveda help if I eat well but still don't gain weight?
Yes. Ayurveda looks beyond how much you eat and considers how well your body digests and uses food. If digestion is not functioning well, simply increasing food intake may not lead to healthy weight gain.
Does everyone who is underweight need the same treatment?
No. Ayurveda does not treat low body weight as a single condition. The treatment plan is based on factors such as digestion, appetite, strength, lifestyle, and the reason behind the weight loss.
Why does Ayurveda focus so much on digestion before weight gain?
According to Ayurveda, nourishment begins with proper digestion. When digestion is healthy, the body can absorb nutrients more effectively and gradually build healthy tissues.
Can I take Ashwagandha on my own to gain weight?
Self-medication is not recommended. Ashwagandha is not suitable for everyone, and an Ayurveda physician will prescribe it only after assessing your overall health, digestion, and the underlying reason for being underweight.
Which foods are commonly recommended for healthy weight gain in Ayurveda?
Foods such as milk, ghee, rice, wheat, green gram, dates, raisins, and soaked almonds are commonly used. However, the exact diet is individualised rather than following the same food list for everyone.
Is exercise recommended while trying to gain weight?
Yes, but it should be appropriate for your strength. Gentle strengthening exercises are generally preferred over long or exhausting workouts, especially during recovery from illness.
How long does it take to gain weight with Ayurveda?
Healthy weight gain is usually gradual. Many people notice improvements in appetite, digestion, and energy before they see significant changes on the weighing scale.
Can stress make it harder to gain weight?
It can. Ongoing stress may affect appetite, digestion, sleep, and recovery, all of which can make healthy weight gain more difficult.
When should I see a doctor instead of trying to gain weight on my own?
You should seek medical advice if you are losing weight without trying, continue to lose weight despite eating well, or develop symptoms such as persistent diarrhoea, fever, difficulty swallowing, or excessive thirst.
Is the goal of Ayurveda simply to increase body weight?
No. The aim is to improve digestion, support healthy tissue nourishment, and rebuild strength. Weight gain is expected to follow as the body recovers, rather than being forced through excessive eating.
