Introduction
Tonsils are two lymph nodes located at the back of the throat, that act as the first line of defence against infections. Because of this, the infection of tonsils or tonsillitis is a common issue. It usually affects children. Tonsillitis is associated with sore throat, difficulty in swallowing, tender lymph nodes on sides of the neck and fever. Most cases of tonsillitis are caused by viral or bacterial infection. It is of three types- acute, chronic and recurrent. Tonsillitis that are of sudden onset are called acute, while a persistent occurrence of infection is called chronic tonsillitis. People who experience repeated episodes of acute infection are said to have recurrent tonsillitis. Ayurveda can be helpful in not only providing relief in tonsillitis but can also help in improving your immunity to reduce the recurrence of the disease. In this blog we will learn more about Ayurvedic treatment for tonsillitis.
Ayurveda on Tonsillitis
In Ayurveda, tonsillitis is mentioned as Tundikeri, caused due to intake of Kapha vitiating foods like curd, black gram, milk, and not maintaining proper dental and oral hygiene. The vitiated kapha causes agnimandya or low digestive fire that leads to formation of ama or metabolic toxins and raktadushti(vitiation of blood tissue). This raktadushti affects the talu (palate) and kantha(throat) and manifests as Sopha (inflammation), Toda (pricking pain), Daha (burning sensation), Prapaka (Suppuration).

Dietary Recommendations
- Consume warm, freshly prepared food.
- Prefer foods that have katu-tikta rasa.(pungent and bitter taste)
- Avoid foods that are madhura-amla-lavana rasa pradhana (predominant in sweet, sour and salty taste), as they further vitiate kapha.
- Avoid sleep during the day, head bath and cold water for drinking. Sip on warm water boiled with ginger.
- Avoid milk, milk products, jaggery, fish and kapha vitiating foods.
