Ayurvedic Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment

Pain is just as painful as you allow it to be! Start acting!!

What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or Amavatha is an autoimmune and inflammatory disease in which your immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells in your body, resulting in inflammation (painful swelling) in the affected joints.

RA, or rheumatoid arthritis, primarily affects multiple joints, which are mostly attacked simultaneously. The hands, wrists, and knees are the most common joints affected by RA. The lining of a joint affected by RA becomes inflammatory, causing joint tissue destruction. Long-term or chronic pain, unsteadiness (loss of balance), and deformity can all result from tissue damage. RA can also affect other tissues in the body, including the lungs, heart, and eyes, causing complications. Ayurvedic Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment is an evidence-based approach that aims to balance the doshas and reduce the inflammation and pain of the joints. RA Treatment in Ayurveda involves Ayurvedic treatment, dietary changes, Whole person health, Root cause reversal of the disease, and cleansing therapies that can help in restoring the mobility and function of the joints.

Signs and Symptoms

There are times when symptoms worsen, called flares, and times when symptoms improve, called remissions, in RA.

The following are RA signs and symptoms:

  • Joint aches affecting multiple joints
  • Multiple joint stiffness
  • Tender, warm and swollen joints
  • Morning stiffness
  • Symmetrical symptoms i.e., Symptoms are seen on both sides of the body (such as in both hands or both knees)
  • Loss of Weight
  • Fever
  • Tiredness and fatigue
  • Weakness

According to research, roughly 8-9 percent of the adult population has rheumatoid arthritis, and about 5-6 percent of the population has joint (or associated) illnesses. Rheumatoid Arthritis affects about 1% of the world’s population, and women are three times more likely than males to be affected.

It can start at any age, although it is most common between the ages of 25 and 55. In India, the prevalence of RA in adults ranges from 0.5 to 3.8 percent in women and 0.15 to 1.37 percent in men, with the highest incidence occurring in the fourth decade of life.

Ayurveda Treatment

Vata (the wind element), Pitta (the fire element), and Kapha (the water element) govern the body’s functioning. We are at our healthiest when these three are working in tandem, collaborating and cooperating with one another.

RA is caused by Vata Dosha triggered by Inflammation build-up (Ama). Poor metabolism or inadequate gut health leads to accumulation of Ama, leading to tissue level damages. The build up Vata caused by various factors like mutually incompatible foods (Virudhaharam), unwholesome daily regimen, sedentary work patterns, late night vigil, stress etc., pushes Ama to areas of bones and joints.

After additional vitiation by vata and kapha, the Ama enters the circulation and is later linked to morbid pitta. This gives the mixture a corrosive quality, and it tends to kill any tissue or organ it comes into touch with ( autoimmune mechanism). The vitiated Ama and vata become trapped in numerous joints, primarily the lumbar back, knee, and hips, causing bodily rigidity and severe discomfort.

Early stage:

Ayurveda heals Rheumatoid Arthritis at an early stage by reversing the etiopathogenesis at its root. Treatment for Amavata in the early stage focuses on completely restoring flexibility and mobility by regulating vata dosha, removing (ama) toxins to reduce redness and inflammation, and then revitalising the asthi and majja dhatu to strengthen the bones and nervous system through Rasayana therapy. Various treatment modalities like Langana, Deepana and Pachana therapies are used along with the herbal medications, to improve digestion and tissue mechanisms thereby establishing optimum functions of the immune system.

Subsequent stage:

In latter stages of Rheumatoid arthritis, Ayurveda treatment involves an Outcome focussed and efficient combination of panchakarma procedures and herbs, emphasizing on Shaman aushadhi (oral medication) as well as, Shodhana (elimination therapy). Panchakarma procedures like Oleation(Snehana), (fomentation(swedana)), therapeutic purgation(virechana)and enema ( Basti) are beneficial to re-establish the optimum functions of immune system. With the use of personalised medicines, diet and lifestyle improvements and specifically developed detox therapies to balance the doshas, Ayurveda can effectively improve the quality of life. All these measures are executed in such a way as to meet the individual requirements of each person and their respective State of disease.

How is this made possible?
  • A thorough and complete recording of the patient’s medical history, capturing every minute aspect of his/her lifestyle.
  • A thorough head-to-toe clinical examination, uncovering health risk factors that the patient is unaware of, directly connected or unrelated with his presenting medical complaint(s).
  • This process of detailed history recording and clinical examination- which includes the classical Srotha-Vikrti pariksha – leads to an accurate understanding of the Dosha status of the individual and lays the foundation for an accurate differential diagnosis and medical management.
  • Further, the patient is entitled to be clearly informed about the diagnosis arrived at, as also understand the medical management proposed for him. The Physician shall proceed only with the patient’s informed concurrence.
