Ayurveda Approach to Natural Labor and Childbirth

As pregnancy approaches its final stage and labor nears, Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of a dedicated space that ensures the mother’s comfort, privacy, and well-being. This specially designed space, known as Sutikagara, provides a natural and supportive environment while being well-equipped to handle any emergencies. The Sutikagara is stocked with essential herbs categorized into three types: those for infection control, including surface and area fumigation; herbs that aid in inducing labor if necessary; and herbs that promote mental relaxation. Additionally, the space must contain highly nourishing yet easily digestible foods such as Shastika Shali (a special variety of rice) cooked with milk, meat broth, herbs, and ghee to support the mother’s strength and recovery. Emergency medicines are also essential, including those to manage severe bleeding, prevent convulsions, and control infections. Equipment for newborn resuscitation, including special herbs to cleanse the vernix, ligation threads, and Ayurvedic scissors for cutting the umbilical cord, should also be readily available. Beyond physical care, emotional support is crucial during labor.
