What is Osteoarthritis? By Dr. Rakesh Nair

Osteoarthritis is a common degenerative joint disease with gradual cartilage loss. It primarily affects aging individuals and results from wear and tear on joint tissues. Ayurveda terms this as Sandhi Gata Vata, attributing it to Vata Dosha and Ama ( metabolic toxins) accumulation in joints. The condition progresses gradually, but occasional exceptions exist. Inflammation and injuries trigger bony changes, tendon and ligament deterioration, and cartilage breakdown. Osteoarthritis can affect any joint but typically affects the hands, knees, hips, lower back, and neck. Osteoarthritis Ayurveda treatment at AyurVAID targets inflammation and aims to restore joint function.
