Introduction

Anemia is a prevalent condition due to lack of healthy red blood cells or Hb in the body. This leads to reduced oxygen supply to the organs and causes weakness, fatigue, dizziness, pallor and palpitations. Ayurveda mentions anemia as Pandu, caused due to imbalance of Pitta dosha along with Vata. The treatment approach of Ayurveda is to maintain the equilibrium of doshas with dietary and lifestyle changes along with medicines and Panchakarma therapies. In this blog we will discuss about home remedies for anemia and natural ways to increase hemoglobin.

Ayurveda Perspective on Anemia

As mentioned, Pandu roga, is a Pitta dosha imbalance, caused due to intake of sour, salty and incompatible foods, excessive worry etc. This Pitta vitiation causes rasa and rakta dushti or vitiation of plasma and blood. The affected rasa and rakta affect twak (skin) and mamsa (muscle), resulting in discoloration of skin or pallor. Ayurveda treatment involves eliminating the vitiated Pitta with Panchakarma therapies, medicines and Diet modifications and nourishing Rasa and Rakta.

Home Remedies To Improve Hemoglobin

  • Consume iron rich food such as green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds
  • Include food rich in Vitamin C, A and beta carotene as they help in better iron absorption. These foods include carrots, citrus fruits, papaya, guava, sweet potatoes, mangoes etc
  • Increase your folate intake as it is essential in production of hemoglobin. Spinach, beans, peanuts, whole grains etc are rich in folate.
  • Soak 5-6 prunes or black raisins in warm water overnight and drink this on empty stomach.
  • Consume drumstick leaves by adding them in your curries, dal and rotis.
  • Keep yourself hydrated. Avoid drinking tea and coffee, as they interfere with iron absorption.
