Spondylitis

Disclaimer: The content on this page is about Spondylitis. We will shortly update the content on Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Spondylitis is a spine condition used to describe a group of arthritic spine conditions that cause inflammation in the joints and vertebrae.

Many patients are confused by the similarity of the terms “spondylitis” and “spondylosis.” But it is important that you are aware of the difference between the two, as this is a matter that concerns your spine. To put it simply, while Spondylosis is degenerative in nature, Spondylitis is inflammatory.

Spondylitis is a spine condition used to describe a group of arthritic spine conditions that cause inflammation in the joints and vertebrae. Spondylitis has no known cause, but it is largely considered to be a genetic disease. In severe cases of spondylitis, arthritis in the joints of the spine will deteriorate the joints, causing the vertebrae to fuse and limit mobility in that section of the spine. There is no known foolproof treatment for spondylitis, but several types of Ayurveda Spondylitis stabilization procedures are available at AyurVAID and can help reduce pain and increase mobility at the site of the condition.

Spondylosis is also a form of arthritis in the spine. However, instead of causing inflammation in the spine, spondylosis causes deterioration of the joints and vertebrae. It is often caused by general wear and tear of the spine, such as vertebrae compressing over time and deteriorating the discs found between the vertebrae. Spondylosis can also cause the compression of a nearby nerve root, causing severe and chronic pain in the back and extremities.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms of spondylitis differ based on the cause and severity of the condition. However, the most common symptoms include:

  • Pain and stiffness in back
  • Limited mobility
  • Strange curvature of the spine
  • Limited range of motion for spine
  • Local and radiating pain in the back, hip, and/or extremities.

Ayurveda Treatment

While searching for the pains and aches in Ayurveda, we often find that aggravated Vata dosha is the culprit. The Vata is said to be vitiated either due to the increased catabolic activities of the tissues or the obstruction to Vata’s normal pathways. Alleviating Vata dosha through therapeutic and behavioral alterations is commonly suggested as the solution here. It is achieved mainly by means of Snehana (oleation) and swedana (fomentation), which belong to the preparatory procedures of Panchakarma. Snehana helps nourish the body tissues and provides lubrication for the joints. It can be done either as an oil massage or the oral administration of medicated fats.  Swedana mitigates vata with its ushna (heat) property, clears the blockages allowing the free movements of the dosha, and it loosens the muscles. In addition to this, various Lepas (herbal pastes) can be applied to the affected area which helps increase the absorption and reduce the swelling along with associated complaints.
