Urticaria symptoms vary widely. While some people have minor reactions to cold, others can have severe reactions. Urticaria patches are also called Hives. Urticaria affects about 15-20 % of the total population. This condition can interfere with the routine activities of the patient.

Common Causes

Urticaria occurs due to some allergen or some drug reaction (certain chemicals are touched/inhaled/consumed/injected), food, stress, or other irritants. It occurs when the body reacts to an allergen (antigen), Antigen-Antibody complex developed and releases histamine and other chemicals under the skin.

Classification:

Urticaria can be classified into two:

  • Acute – sudden onset and lasts less than 6 weeks
  • Chronic – persists greater than 6 weeks
Acute Causes:
  • Food like Peanuts, insect bites food, and shellfish.
  • Medications, such as antibiotics like penicillin, sulfur, aspirin, ibuprofen
  • A non-allergic reaction such as infections or emotional/physical stimuli.
  • Some plant pollens, and pet dander.
  • Blood transfusion
Chronic causes
  • It occurs in very few cases and rashes for more than six weeks.
  • Autoimmune disorder.
  • Endocrine abnormalities.

Itching may be severe and having a defined border and a pale center typically urticaria comes and goes. Once allergic reactions happen they remain for several hours, then disappear and later reappear elsewhere. After the urticarial rashes disappear, the skin usually looks completely normal.

Ayurveda Treatment

Urticaria is known as Sheetapitta in Ayurveda. Sheetapitta is comprised of two words- ‘sheeta’ (cold) and ‘pitta’ (warm). The condition occurs due to the dominance of cold (existing in Kapha and Vata dosha) over pitta dosha.

When an individual indulges in food without following rules and regulation of daily regimen, having spicy and fast food eaten, which have very fewer nutritional values, Irregular diet habits, Delayed sleep, exposure to cold wind, and incompatible food habits leads to the production of food toxins (ama visha)These affect the digestive fire and vitiate vata and Kapha dosha. In turn, it’s mixed up with pita dosha, further, they spread all over the body and lodge beneath the skin, and produce reddish rashes with intense itching and pricking sensation.

In contemporary science for the treatment of urticaria, there are different antihistamines and steroids are used in clinical practices. Repeated intake of corticoids and anti-histamines will reduce the immunity of the body. Moreover, chronic urticaria does not always respond to conventional antihistamine drugs.
