Impact of Diet on Pregnancy - An Ayurveda Perspective

Diet plays a crucial role in Garbha Upaghatakara Bhavas, impacting pregnancy by either leading to pregnancy loss, affecting maternal health through disease, or causing congenital anomalies and long-term conditions in the fetus. A pregnant woman’s diet should be light, easy to digest, fresh, and unprocessed, avoiding fermented, stale, reheated, or frozen foods. Consuming excessively pungent, spicy, or sour foods can lead to complications such as hyperemesis, regurgitation, and digestive discomfort. Poor nutrition can result in anemia, while excessive intake of sweets may lead to gestational diabetes, and an unhealthy diet can contribute to hypertension. Ayurveda advises avoiding specific foods, such as certain types of fish and pork, due to their potential harmful effects on fetal development.
