How Do You Identify Atypical Parkinson’s?

Parkinson’s syndrome is a neurological disorder that affects movement, balance, and coordination. However, there are different types of Parkinson’s syndrome, including atypical Parkinsonism. This type of Parkinson’s syndrome is characterized by the presence of additional symptoms beyond the typical motor symptoms seen in Parkinson’s syndrome. In this blog post, we will explore the key symptoms of atypical Parkinson’s.

Symptoms of Atypical Parkinsonism

Atypical Parkinsonism can have a wide range of symptoms, depending on the specific type. However, some of the key symptoms that may indicate the presence of atypical Parkinsonism include:

  • Movement Disorders: These include tremors, rigidity, and bradykinesia (slowness of movement), which are also present in typical Parkinson’s syndrome.

  • Non-Motor Symptoms: Atypical Parkinsonism can cause a range of non-motor symptoms, including depression, anxiety, cognitive impairment, and autonomic dysfunction (dysfunction of the automatic nervous system). These symptoms can be more pronounced in atypical Parkinsonism than in typical Parkinson’s syndrome.

  • End Stages: In the later stages of atypical Parkinsonism, patients may experience severe cognitive impairment, difficulty swallowing, and breathing problems, leading to the need for specialized care.

Types of Atypical Parkinsonism

The three most common types of atypical Parkinsonism are

  • MSA(Multiple System Atrophy) – Characterized by the degeneration of the autonomic nervous system.

  • PSP(Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) – Characterized by the degeneration of the brainstem and basal ganglia

  • CBD(Corticobasal Degeneration) – Characterized by the degeneration of the cerebral cortex and basal ganglia.
