Nausea

A dissatisfaction in the stomach that often accompanies an urge to vomit but doesn’t always oversee vomiting is known as nausea. It is a kind of stomach discomfort that acts as a precursor to vomiting the contents of the stomach. This condition can stem from a variety of causes.  High sensitivity to motion or specific food items, medications, or its effect can cause nausea. Heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux, infection or virus, motion sickness or sea sickness, diets, pains, and ulcers are some other relevant causes of nausea.

Nausea can be classified into two based on the duration of the symptoms; Acute & Chronic. Acute nausea can be caused by food allergies, and viral gastroenteritis and it typically lasts from a few hours to a few days. Whereas chronic nausea can stay up to months. In cases of people undergoing chemotherapy treatment, nausea is found to be a regular visitor. To determine what’s causing nausea, a medical history, and physical examination can be done. Signs of dehydration and administering tests like blood, urine, and even a pregnancy test can be done.

In most cases, nausea is not serious and can go away in a day or two. But the same can be a symptom of many other conditions or severe life-threatening issues.

The 5000-year-old remedial science refers to nausea as Hrillasa which is accompanied by Chardi (vomiting) and Praseka(Salivation). The imbalance in the tridosha i.e Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, and also Ajirna(indigestion) causes this condition in our body. Excess salivation and tastelessness accompany this. Here, instead of the repulsion of saliva towards the stomach, it gets adhered to in the buccal cavity. And among the three doshas, Kapha dosha gets aggravated more leading to this condition of indigestion and salivation.

Hence nidana parivarjana, i.e avoiding the causative factors can be the primary step to treat the hrillasa or praseka condition. All the food habits and junk foods that can aggravate the Kapha dosha have to be avoided for a while. Wholesome, digestive carminatives and anti-flatulent food and medicines are highly recommended. The digestive fire has to be ignited and hunger should be regulated. In addition, Kapha pacifying medicines are highly beneficial for instant effect. For internal administration, Kumaryasava, Draksharishta, Matala Rasayana, Dadimadyavaleha, and Chinchadi lehya can be consumed. And for chewing purposes that are highly effective in nausea, Lavangadi Vati, Eladi Vati, Amalaki Rasayana, Ardraka khanda, etc can be consumed.
