Refractive Errors

Refractive errors are eye disorders where the images are focussed either in front or behind the sensitive layer of retina instead of getting focussed upon the retina.Uncorrected refractive errors is the leading cause of vision impairment & the second leading cause of blindness.Refractive Error (or ametropia) includes myopia or short sightedness, hypermetropia or far sightedness, astigmatism & presbiopia. In myopia the images are focussed infront of retina.Hypermetropia is a condition wherein the images are focussed behind the retina. In Astigmatism there is blurred near & distant vision due to defects in the curvature of eyes. Presbiopia is age related far sightedness.

Ayurveda Treatment for Refractive Errors

In Ayurveda visual disturbances are mentioned under Drishti gata rogas (diseases affecting centre of vision).Ayurvedic classics explains Timira as a visual disturbance syndrome in which a large number of ocular diseases can be included. It includes conditions which start from simple visual disturbance to complete loss of vision.

The symptoms presented as blurred, indistinct & distorted vision can be taken in account for refractive errors. In vatha predominance timira the vision will be vyavidhyani (distorted/wavy), avilani (unclear/blurred),chala (unsteady) & arunabhani (reddish hue/chromatopsia).The vyavidhyani & avilani vision can be taken in consideration for ametropia. The initial stages of timira roga limited to the superficial two patalas (layers) can be concluded as refractive errors.

Vathika Timira treatment can be generally administered for refractive errors.Treatment modalities like Snehapana (administration of medicated ghee),Virechana (purgation therapy),Nasyam (medicated nasal drops) & Nethrakriya procedures like Tarpana (medicated ghee kept in eye for a specific period),Putapaka (topical application of extract into eyes for speculated time),Anjana (medicated kajal),Seka (pouring of medicated solution on closed eyes) etc are administered with appropriate medicines considering the stage of disease & condition of the patient.Along with the treatments eye friendly diet & regimen will be advised.

Apollo AyurVAID’s Evidence Based Approach

The Apollo AyurVAID protocol is based on the simple premise that the Physician must diagnose and treat only based on sufficient evidence. This evidence should be ‘patient or rogi based’ in addition to being ‘disease or roga based’ in accordance with the fundamental principles of Ayurveda.
How is this made possible?
  • A thorough and complete recording of the patient’s medical history, capturing every minute aspect of his/her lifestyle.
  • A thorough head-to-toe clinical examination, uncovering health risk factors that the patient is unaware of, directly connected or unrelated with his presenting medical complaint(s).
  • This process of detailed history recording and clinical examination- which includes the classical Srotha-Vikrti pariksha – leads to an accurate understanding of the Dosha status of the individual and lays the foundation for an accurate differential diagnosis and medical management.
  • Further, the patient is entitled to be clearly informed about the diagnosis arrived at, as also understand the medical management proposed for him. The Physician shall proceed only with the patient’s informed concurrence.

Our Outcome

Ayurvedic treatments can successfully prevent the progression of refractive errors from getting it worse. The therapeutic treatments subsequently checks by preventing worsening of the vision without imposing any adverse reaction to the user.
