Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease where the body’s antibodies mistakenly attack its own joints, leading to inflammation, damage, and pain. The condition primarily affects distal joints, such as the interphalangeal and metacarpal joints, and tends to be symmetrical—for instance, if one wrist is affected, the other will likely become involved over time. RA is commonly observed in younger individuals, particularly those under stress or working night shifts, and is more frequently seen in women. Symptoms include joint pain, swelling, stiffness (especially in the early morning), fatigue, fever, and difficulty in movement. In its advanced stages, the disease may also affect other organs like the skin, heart, lungs, and kidneys. While hereditary and environmental factors are known contributors, recent research highlights the role of gut health and digestion. Poor digestion, or ‘dysbiosis,’ can lead to gut inflammation and a condition known as leaky gut syndrome. This allows toxins to travel through the bloodstream and settle in the joints, triggering an autoimmune response where the immune system releases antibodies that further damage the cartilage. Over time, this can result in joint deformities.
