Leucorrhoea

A thick whitish, yellowish or greenish vaginal discharge is defined as Leucorrhea. Also known by names like The Whites, Fluor Albus, and Sailan-ur-Rahem is a common gynecological complaint that accounts for more than 25-30% of the women visiting the gynecologist. Typically, it is defined as white fluid discharge from the female genitalia that can be either sticky and thick or flows like a liquid. The vaginal discharge that is white in colour is considered a healthy discharge which normal and healthy up to a certain extent as they are competent of flushing out the dead cells in reproductive organs and other toxic organisms in the female body. But the abnormality in the colour and odour calls for danger. A vaginal discharge that is yellowish, reddish, or blackish with several other symptoms and abnormal thickness or texture can indicate infection, malignancy, hormonal changes, or other reproductive health threats. Leucorrhea can be confirmed by finding >10 WBC per high-power field under a microscope while examining vaginal fluid.

There are distinct types of Leucorrhea. It is mainly branched out into two, Physiologic leucorrhea and Pathological leucorrhea.

Physiologic leucorrhea ensues due to estrogen stimulation that acts as a natural defense mechanism for the vagina to sustain its chemical balance.

Pathologic leucorrhea consists of Inflammatory leucorrhea and Parasitic leucorrhea. The inflammatory leucorrhea may result from the inflammation and congestion of vaginal mucosa which feeds the discharge an off odour and yellowish stain. Whereas in Parasitic leucorrhea, it is caused by a group of parasitic protozoans called Trichomonads, which causes a burning sensation, and itching and makes the discharge thick white, or yellowish.

In Ayurveda, Leucorrhoea is chiefly contemplated as a symptom observed in various gynaecological disorders rather than a an ailment. But it can be correlated to Shweta Pradara or Pandura Asrugdhara. As the name indicates, Shweta Pradara (white discharge) defines the white discharge from the vagina. According to the clinical features, Shweta pradara can be a Kaphaja vyapad disruption of the female genital organ. Hence the aggravation of Kapha dosha due to the etiopathogenesis and other causative factors lead to the formation of Shweta pradara. Mithyaahara-vihara (irregular diet and lifestyle), Artavadosha (menstrual and reproductive disorders), Beejadosha, excessive coitus, abortion, improper mode of life, etc are some other expected etiological factors. The Kapha dosha is the main causative factor that has to be brought back to equilibrium and the toxins have to be expelled through the restorative treatment.

Nidana parivarjana I.e avoiding the causative factors and comprising Kaphahara (that does not vitiate Kapha dosha) food and diet regimen has to be heeded. In addition, Vaginal suppositories, Basti, Medicated fumigation, etc can be done for betterment. Specific treatments like Yonisrava, Yoni paicchilya, etc can be administered according to the dish vitiation. A teaspoon of Amalaki (Indian gooseberry) powder with one teaspoon of honey if consumed twice a day can act as an effective remedy for this condition.
