Table of Contents

Respiratory problems in children are a common concern for parents worldwide. Ayurveda offers a natural approach to addressing these issues by focusing on strengthening the immune system and preventing recurrent infections. Understanding Ayurveda’s perspective on the prevention and treatment of respiratory conditions helps in building a stronger foundation for the immune system.

Strengthen the Immune System

Children’s immune systems continue to develop till they become adolescents, and this time period is more prone to infections. Ayurveda emphasizes enhancing the child’s immunity as the first line of defense against respiratory ailments. Certain herbs like Ashwagandha, Tulsi, and Amla are recommended to boost immunity in children. These can be given in the form of Kadhas or supplements. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains helps in maintaining a strong immune system.

Adequate sleep, regular exercise, and outdoor activities contribute to overall health and immunity.

Respiratory Infections and Ayurveda Care

Ayurveda views recurring respiratory infections as an imbalance in the body’s doshas, particularly Vata and Kapha. Home remedies such as Steam inhalation with eucalyptus or ajwain (carom seeds) can provide relief from congestion and cough. Avoid excessive consumption of cold and oily foods, especially  ice creams, smoothies, fruit juices as ‘treats’ for children, as they can aggravate Kapha and lead to respiratory issues. OTC supplements Chyawanprash can help prevent frequent infections but should be taken only in the prescribed quantity and duration by the Ayurveda physician.

Prevention Tips Based on Ayurveda

  • Balanced Diet: Ensure your child’s diet includes warm, cooked meals with a variety of fresh vegetables and fruits. Avoid processed foods and excess sugar, which can weaken the immune system.
  • Hydration: Encourage your child to drink warm water throughout the day when sick. Herbal teas or medicated water infused with herbs like ginger or Tulsi can be beneficial.
  • Oil Massage (Abhyanga): Regular oil massage using warm sesame or coconut oil can improve circulation and promote relaxation. It also helps in reducing Vata imbalances.  It is recommended to perform Abhyanga on the chest and back gently before bathing with warm water.
  • Proper Digestion: Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of a strong digestive fire (Agni). Understand your child’s hunger pattern and avoid overeating. Always offer warm, well-cooked meals to aid digestion.
  • Healthy Lifestyle: Maintain a daily routine that includes regular wake-up and sleep times. Avoid using digital devices especially while having meals and before sleeping. This stabilizes the body’s internal clock and supports overall well-being.
  • Nasal Care: Instilling a few drops of warm ghee or sesame oil in the nostrils (Nasya) can help keep the respiratory passages clear and prevent infections. Practice this technique on recommendations of the Ayurveda physician.
  • Avoid Allergens: Identify and minimize exposure to allergens like pollen, dust mites, or chemical perfumes that can trigger respiratory problems. Ensure wearing a mask while traveling to prevent against pollution.
  • Emotional Well-being: Frequent crying, anxiety and restelessness contibute to Vata imbalance. Ensure a stress-free environment at home. Ayurveda focuses on understanding and treating the connection between emotional health and physical well-being to improve health.
